Announcing $10,000 Grant From Glick Philanthropies To Support Volunteer Drivers

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia has received a $10,000 grant from the Glick Community Relief Fund, a grant program of Glick Philanthropies that supports local nonprofit organizations providing access to basic needs. The grant award will fund gas cards for Senior Services’ volunteer meal delivery drivers so the nonprofit can continue to meet the needs of vulnerable older adults.

Over the course of the pandemic, Senior Services provided over 550,000 home-delivered meals, with the assistance of more than 400 volunteers. Despite rising inflation and gas prices, Senior Services’ volunteers have been steadfast in delivering home-delivered meals using their own fuel and resources. With this support from Glick Philanthropies, volunteers will receive gas cards to help offset the increased cost of fuel.

“Without the help of Glick Philanthropies, our community, and our volunteers, we would not be able to deliver meals to all the older adults in need,” said Steve Zollos, CEO of Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia. “We are very grateful to Glick Philanthropies for their support.”

The grant was one of 90 totaling $695,600 to organizations supporting communities where Gene B. Glick Company properties are located during this time of heightened demand and economic uncertainty. The grants are intended to help strengthen communities facing undue hardships caused by the pandemic and inflation. Senior Services was one of five Virginia-based organizations to receive the funds.

“Glick Philanthropies is committed to offering support to nonprofit organizations that are providing essential basic needs to our most vulnerable communities,” said Ben Grande, Director of Philanthropy for Glick Philanthropies. “The efforts of these organizations are especially critical now as our communities face rising inflation and the continued effects of the pandemic. Our work with the Community Relief Fund allows us to help 90 organizations that are making meaningful contributions to communities, families, and individuals across the country.”

2022 marks the seventh year that Glick Philanthropies has administered its property-nominated grant program. Through this initiative, over $3.5 million has been awarded to roughly 225 organizations in communities where Gene B. Glick Company properties are located. This year, food access elevated as the area with the greatest need.

Elizabeth River Crossings has awarded Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia a $10,000 grant for its I-Ride transportation program.

The gift will be used to support transportation for older adults in the Portsmouth and Western Tidewater areas. Specifically, the funds will go toward transportation-related administrative, overhead, and program expenses.

This is not the first contribution by Elizabeth River Crossings; in 2020 it provided Senior Services with the funds to support roughly 1000 older adults in crisis at the height of the pandemic. Through delivery of meals, PPE, and other necessities, the organization helped thousands of seniors remain healthy, safe, and connected to their communities.

“We are so grateful for the continued partnership of Elizabeth River Crossings,” said Steve Zollos, chief executive officer of Senior Services. “Thanks to their generosity and support, we can continue to provide safe, affordable, and reliable transportation to older adults throughout the region.”

Elizabeth River Crossings, operators of the Downtown Tunnel, Midtown Tunnel and the MLK Expressway, has made donations to several organizations and initiatives as part of its community impact efforts.

“As a transportation company, we know access is crucial. We’re proud to support Senior Services’ efforts to provide safe, reliable transport options to doctor’s appointments, dialysis visits, adult day care, or any location that adults 60+ need to get to,” says Anna Bonet, chief executive officer, Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC).

Senior Services Awarded $10,000 Grant From Begin Again Foundation

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia Awarded $10,000 Grant From Begin Again Foundation

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia has announced that it received a $10,000 grant from the Begin Again Foundation to support its home-delivered meals program. The Foundation’s funding added critical capacity to the program over the holidays and has helped to get vulnerable seniors off the waiting list.

“We are extremely grateful for the Begin Again Foundation’s support,” said Steve Zollos, Chief Executive Officer for Senior Services. “This gift could not have come at a more opportune time.”

As the nonprofit organization approached the holidays, requests for meals and other assistance had been growing rapidly, while at the same time resources for meals and other emergency needs were running low.

“With the holiday season just around the corner, and COVID-19 so heavily weighing on the health and safety of our elderly neighbors, my Wellness team was having to tell hungry seniors that we could not respond immediately to their needs,” said Zollos. “The Foundation’s gift allowed us to immediately start sending home-delivered meals to those on the waiting list.”

The Begin Again Foundation is among six community partners to contribute this level of support during the COVID-19 pandemic, making them recognized members of the nonprofit organization’s recently established Heroes Society. The Heroes Society, part of a larger program for philanthropy, recognizes those essential donors who give more than $5,000 to support Senior Services’ emergency response programs.

Audrey Leishman, Begin Again Foundation Co-founder said, “We are proud to partner with organizations in our community who support our neighbors in need. We are grateful for the programs Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia provides to vulnerable seniors and are relieved the waiting list for meals has been cleared.”

Senior Services, which operates throughout South Hampton Roads and Western Tidewater, serves as a one-stop resource for older adults and their caregiver families. With the support of corporate and community partners like the Begin Again Foundation, it has provided 344,000 meals to older adults since the start of the pandemic.

Senior Services Receives Grant from Glick Philanthropies Community Relief Fund

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia Among 107 Organizations Selected for $820,000 Community Relief Fund

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia received a $7500 grant from the Glick Community Relief Fund, a grant program of Glick Philanthropies to help local nonprofit organizations continue to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. Senior Services supports residents and neighbors of Cambridge Square, an apartment community managed by the Gene B. Glick Company.

The grant to Senior Services was one of 107 grants totaling $821,600 to organizations supporting communities during this time of heightened demand. Organizations were nominated by Gene B. Glick Company employees. Qualifying organizations were then asked to complete an application.

“Glick Philanthropies is committed to building strong, vibrant communities where the Gene B. Glick Company operates,” said David Barrett, vice chair, president and CEO of the Glick Family Foundation. “A strong community means access to safe, affordable housing, programs to meet the basic needs of our most vulnerable neighbors, and initiatives that deepen our connection through the arts. Many of our neighbors face challenges associated with the coronavirus, but there are organizations doing heroic work to help. We’re proud to support these organizations through the Glick Community Relief Fund so they can continue to build community and create opportunity.”

The number of older adults receiving Senior Services’ home-delivered meals has tripled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, the organization has been providing 3,000 meals per week to seniors throughout its service area. With the additional support from Glick Philanthropies, Senior Services has been able to ensure that 55 seniors who reside in Glick’s Cambridge Square apartments and in adjacent communities have access to fresh produce to supplement their meals during the pandemic.

“As we continue to meet the needs of older adults during this pandemic, we are grateful for the support of the Glick Foundation,” said Steve Zollos, CEO, Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia. “This grant will allow us to keep our seniors safe while providing them with the nutritious meals they need.”
