Homeless Initiative

Older adults experiencing homelessness is increasing in South Hampton Roads, and across the nation.  These older adults are more likely to have compounding health conditions, no access to regular primary care or adequate nutrition, and no family support.

Supportive Services

• Assistance with navigating the housing process and linkage to benefits including SNAP (food stamps), health insurance, wrap around supportive services and more.
• The HOA program works closely with several service providers to help connect individuals with various resources that are available to assist in finding permanent housing.

Community Outreach

• The Homeless Older Adults Program provides street outreach to persons experiencing homelessness. Outreach Specialist provides direct services for those on the street, serves as navigators through the housing process, and provides short-term case management once an individual is housed.
• Outreach will provide individualized client support throughout the journey by helping individuals to develop a plan to address their barriers, increase their income, obtain permanent housing, secure social services, and coordinate wrap around supportive services.

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia is committed to initiatives that increase access to services and supports for older adults experiencing homelessness in South Hampton Roads.  Additionally, Senior Services is a member of the Southeastern Virginia Homeless Coalition, chair of the regional Singles Service Coordination Committee, and chair of the Coalition for Homeless Elders.

In support of our partners operating shelters and housing programs, Senior Services is currently accepting donations. Financial donations can provide hot meals and more to older adults in need.
